Missouri Senate Fails to Pass Legislation That Would Save Babies and Protect Women

In the last week of the 2008 Missouri Legislative Session, the Missouri Senate chose not to take up and pass pro-life legislation to save babies and protect women.  The Senate debated this very important pro-life legislation for a total of five minutes the entire 2008 legislative session.

“Missouri Right to Life is astonished that the Missouri Senate did not pass HB 1831.  This legislation would have required abortion clinics to offer a woman the opportunity to view an ultrasound before undergoing an abortion, inform them that unborn children can feel pain during the abortion, and would have protected women from some forms of coercion,” said Pam Fichter, President of Missouri Right to Life.  “The Missouri Senate has missed an opportunity to assure that women who consider abortion are informed and protected.”

“The groundwork for this legislation was placed in statute back in 2003 when the Missouri Legislature passed the 24-hour reflection period which has been upheld by the courts.  We are just astounded in the Senate’s failure to pass HB 1831,” Fichter continued.

Missouri Right to Life calls upon the Governor to convene a special session of the Legislature to address these important life-saving measures in HB 1831.
